Tourist attractions
At a distance of 9 km from Kętrzyn there lie the ruins of Hitler's war headquarters "Wolf's Lair". It was built in the forest near the village of Gierłoż between 1940-1944. This place was chosen as a very convenient to conduct German invasion of the Soviet Union. The Todt Organisation raised here over 80 structures. They were supposed to provide Hitler and his immediate associates with maximum security. In July 1944, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg made here a failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler. The quarters were blown up during the withdrawal of German troops. Currently, the area is protected and made available to the public.
