Tourist attractions
Olsztyn is one of the most beautifully situated cities in Poland. Surrounded by numerous lakes and forests, it constitutes a major tourist attraction, not only for its inhabitants, but also for Polish and foreign tourists visiting the region of Warmia and Mazury in the summer in great numbers. The Warmia Chapter Castle - gothic, its construction started around 1346. The largest exhibition hall is in former refectory, with a subtle crystal canopy dated approx. 1520. Nowadays, the castle houses the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. The High Gate - from the end of the fourteenth century, the common name of the preserved Tower of the Upper Gate (entrance to the city guarded by two gate towers). In the mid-nineteenth century it was transformed into a prison. Wojciech Kętrzyński - historian, publicist, ethnographer, fighter for the Polish character of these lands was held there.
